A supermarket depends on reliable refrigeration to preserve perishable products, maintain food safety and support uninterrupted daily trading. When a centralised refrigeration system begins experiencing repeated breakdowns, the consequences can extend beyond equipment repairs to product losses, operational disruption and increasing maintenance costs.
Glotech Group was appointed to carry out a major refrigeration system upgrade at SPAR Wellington, where an existing multiplex refrigeration system had developed persistent reliability problems.
The client had previously attempted to resolve the breakdowns through compressor repairs. Unfortunately, these interventions failed to provide a lasting solution, and the refrigeration system continued experiencing operational difficulties.
Following a technical assessment, Glotech Group determined that all three existing compressors required replacement. Several electrical control components had also become obsolete, making a comprehensive system upgrade the most practical long-term solution.
The project involved replacing three Copeland compressors with Bitzer compressors, upgrading the electrical protection and control components, and completely rewiring the system.
The upgrade was successfully completed within five working days, restoring the supermarket’s refrigeration system to reliable operation.
The supermarket’s existing multiplex refrigeration system had become increasingly unreliable.
A multiplex refrigeration system uses multiple compressors operating together to provide cooling capacity for connected refrigeration equipment. These systems are commonly used in supermarkets and other facilities where several refrigerated display cabinets or storage units require centralised cooling.
The advantage of this arrangement is that refrigeration capacity can be managed according to the demand placed on the system.
However, when several compressors begin experiencing mechanical problems, the reliability of the entire refrigeration installation can be affected.
At SPAR Wellington, the client had already invested in repairs to the existing compressors, hoping to restore dependable performance.
Unfortunately, the repairs did not resolve the underlying problems.
The system continued experiencing breakdowns, prompting the client to seek a more permanent solution.
For a busy supermarket, recurring refrigeration failures create considerable operational risk. Refrigerated products must remain within their required storage temperatures, and extended breakdowns can affect stock quality, food safety and normal trading activities.
The client needed more than another temporary repair. The refrigeration system required a comprehensive technical assessment to determine whether the existing equipment could still be operated reliably.
For businesses experiencing similar compressor failures or recurring refrigeration breakdowns, Glotech Group provides specialist commercial refrigeration repair services focused on identifying and correcting the underlying faults.
Glotech Group carried out an assessment of the existing multiplex refrigeration installation.
The inspection focused on the condition of the compressors, electrical protection equipment and refrigeration control components.
Two major problems were identified.
The refrigeration system was operating with three Copeland compressors.
Although previous repairs had been attempted, the compressors continued experiencing problems.
Our assessment established that all three compressors required replacement to restore dependable refrigeration performance.
Continuing to repair the existing compressors would not provide the level of reliability required for a supermarket refrigeration installation.
A complete compressor replacement was therefore recommended.
The second major issue involved the electrical control system.
Several electrical components had become obsolete, creating concerns around long-term serviceability and the availability of suitable replacement parts.
The electrical system also required substantial rewiring.
Replacing the compressors without addressing these control and protection issues would leave important weaknesses in the refrigeration installation.
Glotech Group therefore recommended upgrading both the mechanical refrigeration equipment and the electrical control system as part of one coordinated project.
Following the assessment, Glotech Group recommended replacing the three existing Copeland compressors with three Bitzer compressors selected for the system’s operating requirements.
Bitzer is an established manufacturer of commercial and industrial refrigeration compressors, with equipment used in demanding refrigeration applications worldwide.
For this project, the replacement compressors were selected to provide a more dependable foundation for the supermarket’s centralised refrigeration system.
The upgrade involved removing the existing compressors, installing the replacement units and integrating them into the multiplex refrigeration arrangement.
Correct compressor selection is particularly important in a multiplex system because the compressors must operate together within the required refrigeration capacity and control arrangement.
The objective was not simply to replace faulty components. It was to restore the system’s ability to deliver dependable refrigeration across the supermarket.
Replacing the compressors was only one part of the project.
The existing electrical controls had also reached a stage where replacement was necessary.
Glotech Group carried out a comprehensive electrical upgrade, including the replacement of critical protection and control components.
New refrigeration pressure switches were installed to provide the required high-pressure and low-pressure protection.
These devices help protect compressors against abnormal refrigeration operating conditions.
High-pressure protection responds when discharge pressure rises beyond the permitted operating range.
Low-pressure controls can be used for compressor control or protection, depending on the refrigeration system design.
Correct pressure control is essential for protecting refrigeration equipment and maintaining dependable operation.
The existing electrical breakers were replaced as part of the control system modernisation.
Circuit breakers provide electrical protection against specified overload and short-circuit conditions.
Correctly selected protective devices are important for the safe operation of commercial refrigeration equipment.
Oil protection switches were also replaced.
Proper compressor lubrication is essential for preventing mechanical damage and excessive wear.
Where applicable to the compressor and control arrangement, oil safety controls help identify lubrication problems before they develop into serious mechanical failures.
The electrical upgrade included complete rewiring of the refrigeration control system.
This work was necessary to integrate the new compressors and protection devices into a functional and serviceable installation.
The completed electrical system provided a renewed control arrangement suitable for the upgraded refrigeration equipment.
One of the most important decisions in this project was addressing the refrigeration and electrical problems simultaneously.
Replacing the compressors alone would have left the supermarket dependent on ageing electrical components.
Likewise, replacing the electrical controls without addressing the failing compressors would not have resolved the recurring mechanical problems.
By upgrading both systems, Glotech Group addressed the two major areas identified during the assessment.
This approach reduced the risk of leaving unresolved faults within the existing refrigeration installation and provided a more complete long-term solution.
It also allowed the replacement compressors, pressure controls, oil protection devices and electrical equipment to be integrated and commissioned as one system.
The entire project was completed within five working days.
The scope required careful coordination because the work involved several major components within a centralised supermarket refrigeration system.
The project included the following stages.
Stage 1: System Preparation
The existing refrigeration installation was prepared for the upgrade, including isolation of the equipment and preparation for compressor removal.
Stage 2: Removal of Existing Compressors
All three Copeland compressors were removed to make way for the replacement equipment.
Stage 3: Installation of Bitzer Compressors
Three replacement Bitzer compressors were installed and connected to the existing multiplex refrigeration arrangement.
Stage 4: Electrical Control Replacement
The obsolete electrical components were replaced, including pressure switches, circuit breakers and oil protection switches. The system was completely rewired.

Following completion of the mechanical and electrical upgrades, Glotech Group commissioned the refrigeration system.
The upgraded multiplex installation was successfully brought into operation, allowing the supermarket’s connected refrigeration equipment to operate on the renewed system.
The completed project delivered several important improvements:
Replacement of all three problematic compressors.
Installation of three Bitzer compressors.
Replacement of obsolete electrical control components.
New high- and low-pressure controls.
Updated electrical circuit protection.
Replacement of compressor oil protection switches.
Complete electrical rewiring.
Successful commissioning of the upgraded multiplex refrigeration system.
Restoration of the supermarket’s refrigeration operation.
Most importantly, SPAR Wellington’s refrigeration system was successfully upgraded and returned to service, replacing the previously unreliable compressor and electrical arrangement.
Multiplex refrigeration systems are more complex than individual refrigeration units because multiple compressors operate as part of a coordinated installation.
Successful upgrades require an understanding of compressor selection, refrigeration pressures, electrical protection, control sequences and system commissioning.
Replacing one component without considering the rest of the installation can leave underlying problems unresolved.
In supermarket applications, the consequences of incorrect refrigeration repairs can be particularly serious because multiple refrigerated cabinets or storage areas may depend on the same centralised system.
The SPAR Wellington project demonstrates the importance of identifying the actual causes of repeated breakdowns before recommending further repairs.
By replacing the problematic compressors and modernising the electrical controls, Glotech Group delivered a comprehensive solution rather than continuing with unsuccessful repairs.
